Nathan Jones is optimistic about Charlton Athletic's progress as they head to Cardiff City for their final Championship fixture before the international break. The manager pointed to a defensive reset and the return of key players as foundations for the club's continued evolution.

Charlton sit sixth in the table with 12 points from seven games, just two points behind leaders West Ham. Their recent form includes successive goalless draws against Queens Park Rangers and Portsmouth, results that Jones views as a solid base.

Defensive platform

Jones highlighted the importance of defensive stability in a demanding division. "We have to do the basics well, we have to lay down a foundation," he said. "We do feel like we have reset defensively, we have kept two back-to-back clean sheets, which is very difficult to do in the Championship."

He acknowledged the need for more attacking threat to turn draws into wins. The manager felt his side were unfortunate not to score in the 0-0 draw with QPR, believing a legitimate goal was disallowed. Against Portsmouth, he said the team needed more quality in the final third to secure all three points.

Squad evolution and player returns

Jones is adamant the club has moved forward significantly in the last two years, citing promotion from League One and a squad now better equipped for the second tier. He expects the group to become considerably stronger after the international break as injured players return.

Defender Josh Edwards is looking like his old self after a careful rehabilitation from a setback, while striker Charlie Kelman has healed quickly from a structural injury. The return of these players, along with others, will ease a defensive shortage that has required rotation during a congested period.

Striker Miles Leaburn has earned particular praise from his manager for a strong start to the season. Jones noted the 22-year-old's journey back from a serious injury and his growing confidence. "He looks like a proper number nine and that is what I am proud of," Jones stated, crediting the coaching staff and the player himself for the progress.

Cardiff challenge and looking ahead

Saturday's early kick-off at the Cardiff City Stadium presents a tough test. Jones expects a well-coached, possession-based side and knows his team must be at their best. "We understand the Championship is brutal and unforgiving and we are up against some very big clubs," he added.

Despite the challenge, the manager is looking forward to the trip to Wales. "I always love going back to God’s country anyway!" he said. "Cardiff is one of my favourite cities. All I am concerned with is coming back with the points."

Charlton will be aiming for their top scorer Tyreece Anthony Tupac Shakur Campbell, who has three goals this season, to find the net again. The team's recent results, including a 1-0 win over Preston and a heavy defeat to Tottenham, show the unpredictable nature of the league. After the international break, the team's next fixture is at home against Norwich City on Saturday, October 19th. Fans can check the upcoming schedule on our fixtures page.

A positive result would solidify their top-six position before the break.
