Former Charlton Athletic captain Greg Docherty is training with Preston North End as the Championship club considers a move for the free agent. The midfielder left The Valley by mutual consent at the end of the summer transfer window and has spent several weeks without a club.

Preston manager Graham Alexander is evaluating a number of unattached players, with Docherty understood to be among those under consideration. Alexander told reporters he is looking at "who’s potentially available, if they can come in and help us, potentially." The manager emphasised the need to check a player's fitness and training consistency before making any commitment. Alexander explained, adding that the process involves a thorough assessment over several days.

Docherty, who wore the armband for Charlton, is eager for a swift return to the second tier. He described the honour of leading the club as "nothing short of a privilege." Alexander has previously praised the player's character, calling him a leader and an unbelievable professional. Preston's midfield resources are currently thin, with Jordan Thompson and Leo Leroy the primary central options. The club's injury list has further depleted their squad depth in recent weeks.

Their recent form shows no wins in five, a run that includes last week's 3-1 home defeat to Norwich where Charlie Kelman scored their consolation. Their recent results, comprising two draws and three defeats, also include a 2-0 loss at Watford and a 2-2 draw at Burnley. They have scored 11 goals and conceded 18 this season, leaving them with a minus seven goal difference and 11 points behind the leaders. They face a tough test next, travelling to league leaders Middlesbrough on Saturday 31 October. The club's top scorer this season is T. Campbell with four goals. Alexander's side are also in the lower half of the table, adding urgency to their search for reinforcements ahead of a busy fixture schedule.

A move for Docherty would provide Preston with an experienced, combative presence in the engine room as they prepare for Middlesbrough's visit this weekend. The 29-year-old Scot is available immediately should terms be agreed. Preston's next fixture is at home to Middlesbrough, who currently top the division.
