Award Ceremony
Rebecca Welch, the first woman to referee a Premier League match in 2023, was honoured with the 2025-26 Sir Bobby Charlton Award during the FA Council meeting at Wembley Stadium. The ceremony also recognised Paul Kirby with the Hope Award for his work in deaf football.
Impact on Charlton Athletic
While the award is not linked to on-field performance, it carries the name of Charlton Athletic’s namesake, Sir Bobby Charlton. The club finished 19th in the Championship last season, earning 53 points from 13 wins, 14 draws and 19 losses. They scored 44 goals and conceded 58. Their next match is a home fixture against Burnley on 16 February 2027.
Welch’s Historic Milestones
Welch’s career is marked by pioneering firsts: she became the first female referee in the EFL, the Premier League, and officiated at major international tournaments. In 2024 she was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame, cementing her status as a trailblazer in the sport.
