Charlton Athletic have strengthened their academy setup with the appointment of Jamie Day as the new Professional Development Phase Coach. The move comes as the Championship club is linked with a potential January transfer for Queens Park Rangers winger Rayan Kolli to address their recent attacking struggles.
Jamie Day arrives at Sparrows Lane to work alongside U18s lead coach Jason Pearce, filling the vacancy left by Kevin James' departure. The former AFC Bournemouth and Welling United midfielder brings a wealth of coaching experience from across the English football pyramid and beyond, including managerial roles at Braintree Town, Welling United, and the Bangladesh national team. Day most recently served as assistant coach to Scott Lindsay at Milton Keynes Dons before returning to his South London roots.
Rayan Kolli’s QPR future in doubt
Speculation is growing that Charlton could target QPR's Rayan Kolli when the transfer window reopens. The 21-year-old Algeria youth international has fallen out of favour at Loftus Road and is expected to seek a move in January. Kolli, a product of the West Ham United academy who joined QPR in the summer of 2023, has made over 50 first-team appearances for the Rs. He showed promise with a brace in a 3-0 win over Norwich City in December 2024 and provided an assist on the opening day of the 2024-25 season at West Brom. However, his progress was hampered by a hamstring injury and a perceived lack of application. QPR manager Julien Stephan has been openly critical, stating there is "a lack of work ethic and commitment being displayed when it comes to Rayan Kolli." The winger has not featured on the bench in the Championship this season, making a January departure appear inevitable.
Charlton’s attacking struggles create opportunity
Charlton's need for additional attacking impetus is clear. Nathan Jones's side sit ninth in the Championship with 12 points from eight games, but their recent form has highlighted a creativity issue. Following a painful 3-1 defeat at Cardiff City on 19 September, the Addicks have registered three consecutive goalless performances, including back-to-back 0-0 draws at The Valley against QPR and Portsmouth. Beyond Tyreece Campbell, who scored Charlton's consolation in Cardiff, the team has struggled for consistent threat in the final third. Manager Nathan Jones has acknowledged the need for improvement, suggesting "something may need to be tweaked in order for them to improve." The club's recent results, which show a form of LDDLD in their last five matches, underline the requirement for more ingenuity.
The international break provides a chance to assess options ahead of the next Championship fixture. Charlton return to action at The Valley on 10 October, hosting Bristol City, who currently sit one place above them in eighth. Supporters can check the full schedule on the club's fixtures page. With the January window approaching, a move for a player of Kolli's profile, seeking to reignite his career, could align with Charlton's needs as they look to climb the standings.
