Charlton Athletic have signed Slovakia defender Ivan Mesik from Dutch club Heracles Almelo for an undisclosed fee. Mesik, 25, has signed a four-year contract as the Addicks' first close-season signing.

What does this signing mean for Charlton?

Charlton manager Nathan Jones said: "We've monitored Ivan for a while and he comes with real good pedigree playing in the Eredivisie." He's an excellent athlete, a great size and very versatile in terms of being able to play down the left-hand side and can cover the right side as well.

Why is this signing important?

England is the sixth different country Mesik has played his club football in. He left his homeland to move to Denmark in 2020, spending three years with Nordsjaelland, with loan spells at Norwegian clubs Stabaek and Odd.
