Charlton Athletic were beaten 2-0 by Watford at Vicarage Road on Saturday, extending their winless run in the Championship. Goals from Luca Kjerrumgaard and Jordan Zemura gave the hosts their first clean sheet of the season and left the Addicks in 17th place with 14 points from 11 games.

Nathan Jones made several changes following the 3-1 loss at Cardiff, but his side struggled to contain a Watford team that had lost six of its previous seven games. The visitors had an early chance when Miles Leaburn headed wide from six yards, but they failed to seriously test goalkeeper Maduka Okoye for long periods. Watford grew into the game, with Edo Kayembe forcing a save from Arthur Okonkwo before the break.

Key moments

The decisive goal arrived in the 58th minute. Kayembe’s shot was parried by Okonkwo, and Kjerrumgaard was quickest to react, slotting home the rebound. Charlton tried to respond, with Charlie Kelman having a close-range effort cleared off the line by substitute Mamadou Doumbia late on. Karoy Anderson also saw a deflected strike go wide as the visitors pushed for an equaliser.

Any hope of a comeback was extinguished deep into stoppage time. Rocco Vata played a perfectly weighted pass to split the defence, and fellow substitute Jordan Zemura lifted a delicate chip over Okonkwo to seal the points. It was Zemura’s first goal for Watford.

Head coach Nathan Jones did not hold back in his assessment. "We were a mile off," he said. "We didn't pass or defend well enough. The first goal was catastrophic from our point of view. We have to be better." The defeat means Charlton have now conceded 15 goals this campaign, a record that places them in the bottom half of the standings.

Looking ahead

The result leaves Charlton with just one win in their last five league outings, a sequence that includes draws with Burnley and Bristol City. Their next opportunity to get back on track comes quickly, with a home game against Norwich City scheduled for next Saturday. Jones will be demanding a significant improvement, particularly from a defence that has shipped nine goals in its last three matches across all competitions. The manager confirmed he would review the performance in detail, stating the need for greater resilience and organisation. The fixture at The Valley kicks off at 3pm on October 24.
